X3 Curse of Xanathon
I recall my group of players (and myself) really liking this adventure as a kid. The
adventure starts off on a high note, with a high official asking the players to help. I
always liked that backstory more than "go explore the unknown for treasure" (like the
previous adventures; see B1, B2).
The really high point of the adventure, though, is when the players encounter the main
villain relatively early in the story. My group was immediately in a state of disarray.
The problem they faced was a villain that can not be killed! They had no idea what to
do. I recall my group stubbornly persisted in attacking without picking up on the
subtle hints I kept offering. And in the end, one of the players died. This taught me
a valuable lesson about DMing (but almost nothing about how to get a date :) ). The
player was (understandably) really upset about loosing their character. They had spent
a considerable amount of time building up their character. In the end, I provided some
way for the player to be resurrected. It is a tough job trying to be fair and balanced,
but at the same time, providing fun and entertainment (that is why we played after all).
Valuable lessons indeed for a young kid.
That one encounter is so difficult to pull off, and so different from the encounters
in previous modules (See B1, B2, B4), I can't actually remember anything else about this
adventure! Will have to wait for my modern review below.
Redux
After a quick skimming through this module again, I have to say this is one great
adventure. I even decided to look up
Douglas Niles
Seems like this is the only Dungeons and Dragons module he wrote, then later moved onto
writing novels.
